A small stone a day

Learning to notice the world

What are Small Stones?

I have created this blog to enable me to participate in the Mindful Writing Challenge (http://www.writingourwayhome.com/p/river-jan-12.html)

I had never heard of “small stones” until coming across the challenge on Facebook. I now know that a small stone is a moment of paying proper attention to something – anything – and then writing it down. http://www.writingourwayhome.com describes a small stone as:

“a short piece of writing (prose or poetry) that precisely captures a fully-engaged moment. The process of finding small stones is as important as the finished product – searching for them will encourage you to keep your eyes (and ears, nose, mouth, fingers, feelings and mind) open.”

The Mindful Writing Challenge simply asks that you write one small stone every day for the month of January. I am excited to take part in this challenge for two reasons: firstly I am optimistic that it will help me to improve as a writer. But more importantly I hope that the process of spending just a few moments each day finding small stones will be enlightening, interesting, calming and fulfilling. With this in mind, I very much hope that reading my small stones will help you notice your own small stone moments.
